TV Size Viewing Distance: 2 Feet Apart at 55 Inches

The one number, and why two manufacturers give you two of them

You have 8 feet between the sofa and the wall, and two manufacturers' own charts will tell you to buy either a 55-inch set or a 75-inch one for that spot. Both are published, both are current, and the tv size viewing distance figure they give for the same panel differs by feet, not inches. TCL puts 5.5 feet in front of a 55-inch screen. LG puts 7.5 feet in front of the same diagonal.

The gap is not a rounding error, and it widens as the screen grows. At 32 inches TCL recommends 1.07 m, or 3.5 feet, against LG's 4.4 feet, a difference of about eleven inches. At 43 inches TCL says 4.5 feet and LG says 5.9 feet. At 55 inches the two are a full two feet apart, and by 75 inches TCL's 7.5 feet sits nearly three feet closer than LG's 10.3.

LG's guide carries a publication date of January 31, 2025. TCL labels its own table a non-binding recommendation and says the distance is a matter of buyer preference.

What follows sets out the spread, notes what each chart does and does not state, and gives the width and height each diagonal actually occupies. If your seating position is fixed, that is the useful direction of the calculation.

Why the charts disagree: immersion versus pixel invisibility

TCL and LG may not be answering the same question, though neither page states the assumption behind its own table. TCL states its target explicitly: a screen that fills 30 to 40 degrees of your field of view. That target is what its ideal viewing distance is derived from. LG's rule of thumb, 0.14 feet of viewing distance per diagonal inch, is stated for Full HD sets, and LG halves it to 0.07 feet per diagonal inch for 4K and Ultra HD. LG never states the target its numbers are built on, so what objective separates the two charts is not documented.

Halving that rule for 4K, as LG does, gives 0.07 feet per diagonal inch. Apply it to a 55-inch set and you get 3.85 feet. The same company's guide, meanwhile, recommends 7.5 feet from a 55-inch TV. That is a discrepancy of nearly two to one inside a single manufacturer's advice, and no page in the sourcing reconciles the rule with the table, or says which resolution the table assumes. The stated range for a 48-to-60-inch set is 6.5 to 8 feet, halved if the panel is 4K, which lands back near 3.25 feet at the bottom end. No source reconciles the chart with the formula.

So pick the goal first, then the number.

TCL is the only source here that names a field-of-view target, 30 to 40 degrees, and derives its distances from it. LG states no target at all. Best Buy splits the difference at 6.5 to 7.5 feet for a 55-inch 4K set. Note that it is a range, not a point.

Which one is yours

Will it fit? Width, height and the wall you actually have

LG lists a 65-inch TV as 57 inches wide and 32.5 inches high. That is the number your media unit has to accept, not 65. Samsung's buying guide makes the same point differently: advertised size is the corner-to-corner diagonal, and the figure you need before buying is published separately under the "Set Size" spec. Check the wall and the console against these, in this order.

• 43 in. — 38 in. wide, 22 in. high (LG). Fits most bedroom dressers; LG pairs it with 5.9 ft of couch distance.
• 50 in. — 44 in. wide, 25.5 in. high (LG).
• 55 in. — 48.5 in. wide, 28 in. high. LG's recommended distance is 7.5 ft.

• 86 in. — 76 in. wide, 43.5 in. high. LG's figure for it is 11.8 ft.

Height matters because of where the centre lands. LG recommends the middle of the screen at eye level or slightly below, with most experts putting the centre about one metre from the floor. A set watched from a recliner or from bed should be mounted higher, potentially as high as 5.9 ft. No source says whether seating distance changes the correct height.

Fixed sofa, variable screen: the point a TV is too big

If the sofa position is fixed, the question flips. Not how far back to sit, but how many inches the wall can carry. LG's chart puts a 75-inch set at 10.3 feet and an 86-inch set at 11.8 feet. Best Buy splits the difference, calling 10 to 13 feet the range for an 80-inch 4K screen.

Read across the three and the published figures line up roughly as follows:

• 8 feet: 65 inches. Best Buy names 8 to 9 feet for a 65-inch 4K set; LG lists 8.9 feet for the same size.
• 10 feet: 75 to 85 inches. LG puts 75 inches at 10.3 feet; Best Buy allows 80 inches from 10 feet.
• 12 feet: LG's largest listed size, 86 inches, sits at 11.8 feet.

TCL advises placing the TV directly in front of the viewer, within about 15 degrees up or down and roughly 40 degrees left to right. That limit is never converted into a maximum screen size at a given distance.

What about the seats at the edges? No source addresses multiple rows or off-axis positions: TCL gives a 40-degree left-to-right limit, but no page says how to size a screen when some seats sit well outside it. Check the width your media console needs for a 75-inch TV before you commit to the size the distance allows.

Where 'sit closer, it's 4K' stops holding, and which set suits which distance

No page addresses content source: whether upscaled HD, streaming compression or native 4K changes the usable distance. Best Buy's chart splits by resolution. It puts a 55-inch 4K set at 6.5 to 7.5 feet, and the same diagonal in 1080p at 8.5 to 9.5 feet. At 65 inches the split is 8 to 9 feet against 10 to 12. Best Buy attributes the difference to resolution: with fewer pixels visible, you can sit closer without straining your eyes.

No source states the visual-acuity basis behind any recommendation, or identifies a threshold beyond which sitting closer stops helping.

Best Buy's own room-by-room guidance runs: 32 inches and smaller for most kitchens, 33 to 44 inches for most average-sized bedrooms, 40 inches for many apartments and smaller for dorm rooms, 55 inches as a starting point for most living rooms, and 85 to 96 inches for a home theater, especially in low-lit rooms with surround sound.

This comparison is built on published manufacturer specifications and stated recommended distances, not on measurement. RTINGS says it has bought and tested 542 TVs and presents its size-to-distance guidance as a calculator with a stated scientific basis; that count is of hardware reviewed, not evidence about viewers. RTINGS also discloses that it is supported by memberships and earns affiliate commissions on purchases made through its links. Nothing here was tested.

Back to your 8 feet. Best Buy names 8 to 9 feet for a 65-inch 4K set and 10 to 12 feet for the same size in Full HD; LG lists 8.9 feet for 65 inches without stating which resolution its table assumes. TCL labels its own table a non-binding recommendation and says the distance is purely a matter of the buyer's preference.

Which one, then?
