Why published ranges contradict each other

Search for "standard coffee table height" and you get at least four answers. Pop Maison puts the range at 14 to 18 inches. Froy sets the floor at 15. Dimensions.com drops it all the way to 10. Tailor Wood Haven contradicts itself on the same page, listing 14–16 inches in one section and 16–18 in another. None of these numbers are wrong. They just describe different furniture.

Ranges starting at 14 inches or lower fold in low-profile designs meant for near-floor seating. A 16-inch lower bound reflects sofas with the standard 17-to-19-inch seat height. Each figure is internally consistent. The contradiction appears only when a guide collapses both traditions into a single range without saying which one it assumes.

Tribesigns places most seat heights at 17–19 inches. New England Table Company agrees but adds that low-profile frames drop to 15 and formal seating pushes past 20. Three problems when the table sits too low

Most guides only warn about tables that are too high. Too low creates three distinct problems.

• Forward hunch from a steep reach angle. When the surface sits well below seat height, picking up a mug forces a deeper forward lean, which can become uncomfortable over an evening.
