What "Reach" Measures, and Why Published Ranges Disagree

Forty-six inches. That is the reach from pole to centre shade of the Basque Arc, a lamp Wirecutter actually tested for its floor lamp guide, and it sits below both published ranges on the record. Nova of California puts most residential arc lamps at 60 to 72 inches of horizontal reach; LOOMLAN's floor lamp guide says 6 to 8 feet, which starts where Nova's range ends.

What reach actually measures

Reach is a single measured line: the horizontal distance from the centre of the base to the point directly below the shade. Nova of California defines arm length that way, and Joybuy's 2026 buyer's guide says the same thing in plainer terms — how far the lamp extends into the room, not how long the curved arm is and not how tall the lamp stands.

That distinction matters, because no source on the record states how manufacturers measure reach — pole centre versus base edge, shade centre versus shade edge — so a single number labelled "reach" in a listing cannot be assumed to be the horizontal line.

Nova's 60–72 inches and LOOMLAN's 6–8 feet sit near the Flos Arco class of lamp — the 1962 Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni design with a Carrara marble base, a stainless steel telescoping arm and a spun aluminum reflector shade, which Nova calls the reference point every long-reach arc lamp is measured against. No source reconciles the published ranges with the reaches of shipping lamps, or says what the ranges are drawn from. Nova gives the Arco's horizontal arm reach as 79 inches. Wirecutter describes the original's curvature as nearly 7 feet, and 79 inches is 6.6 feet. The two figures differ by about five inches.

The Artiva USA arch reaches about 66 inches and the Basque about 46, both below the published ranges; no source establishes what most buyers actually purchase.

Reach by Furniture: A Spec Table

Wirecutter specifies the Basque arc at 77.5 by 15 inches with a 46-inch reach from pole to centre shade, counterbalanced by a genuine Carrara marble base. Nova of California's advice is qualitative: shorter arms suit a single armchair or a narrow reading corner. No source gives a rule for how many inches of reach a given piece of furniture needs, or where the base should sit relative to the seat edge. Nova of California puts the Artiva USA arch at about 66 inches of horizontal reach and about 83 inches tall at its peak, and the Flos Arco's arm at 79 inches horizontally. Nova's guidance goes no further than saying longer arms suit sectional sofas and wide seating.

Bontempi says arc lamps are best used to light a horizontal plane — a table or a seat. No source gives a measuring rule for converting a seating layout into a required reach figure.

Which one is yours

Two Numbers for the Floor Plan: Footprint and Reach

Budget the floor twice: Joybuy's guide says the floor space an arc lamp needs comes from two separate numbers, the footprint of the base and the reach of the arc. Nova of California notes that the curved structure is what lets the light reach across furniture while the base stays out of the way.

• Footprint is the constraint that fails first. LOOMLAN recommends 18 to 24 inches of clearance around a floor lamp for passage and cleaning, though no source specifies whether that clearance applies to the base or to the shade.
• The base is the part that has to find bare floor. The Basque is specified at 77.5 by 15 inches with a 46-inch reach; no source states what furniture that span will clear.
• The two numbers are specified separately. Joybuy treats base footprint and arc reach as distinct figures.
• Weight is what counters the tipping risk. Nova of California notes the centre of gravity shifts away from the base as the arm extends, creating a tipping risk if the base is too light or too narrow, and says better arc lamps answer it with weighted marble bases, cast iron platforms or thick steel feet. No source publishes a base-weight-to-reach ratio or a threshold at which a base becomes too light.
• Wirecutter says the Basque is too large for small spaces, and that rooms with ceilings under 8 to 10 feet need not apply, despite its abbreviated arch and small footprint. Wirecutter does not explain how that ceiling figure is derived.

Measure both numbers against your floor lamp height before you commit.

When the Arc Overshoots

Nova of California lists the common arc lamp placement errors — base in a walkway, shade hanging too low, lamp too close to a screen, lamp in an overcrowded room.

Joybuy's guide says clearance height under the arc is a spec distinct from overall height, and that it is the one governing headroom and whether people will hit the shade. No source publishes the clearance height under the arc for any specific named lamp.

Homebaa puts a seated person's eye level on a standard sofa or chair at 42 to 47 inches from the floor, and Loomlan recommends the bottom of the shade sit 40 to 42 inches up for reading. Those two ranges nearly touch. Joybuy notes that a metal shade directs light straight down while translucent materials give a softer, diffuse light.

Basque White — Longest reach

• 46" reach from pole centre to shade centre, the widest span here
• 77 1/2" tall so the shade clears seated heads and sofa backs
• But: Height is fixed at 77 1/2" — no adjustment if your ceiling or sofa disagrees

Bontempi notes that on some models the arm can be lengthened or shortened and the shade tilted to aim the beam; CB2's Big Dipper has an adjustable arc, so the buyer controls how far down the shade hangs; the Brightech Sparq's steel arm adjusts over a height range of 72 to 82 inches; and Wirecutter characterises its Ligne Roset Mama pick as a big arc with customizable reach. On the Flos Arco, Nova gives the horizontal arm extension as 79 inches and says the shade height is fully adjustable. What no source publishes is how much reach is lost when an adjustable arc is raised or lowered, so a buyer cannot tell whether raising the shade for headroom shortens the span across the sofa.

Which fixed reach fits which room

Nova of California's guidance holds: long arms for sectionals and wide seating, short arms for a single armchair. Wirecutter rates the Basque Arc for a 150 W bulb, not included. No source connects reach to the light level actually delivered at a reading surface, or gives a floor-depth requirement for the lamp.

The Basque's 46 inches sits below both published ranges, and only three measured lamps are on the record — the Basque at 46 inches, the Artiva at about 66, and the Arco at 79. That is not enough to say which figure describes the market. Measure your own seating before trusting either range.
